You would think that a movie starring veterans like Michael Caine and Michael Gambon would not disappoint to this extent.King Of Thieves has the potential to be unique, as it stars a mature cast in a storyline typically reserved for younger actors. However, what starts off as their last criminal hurrah quickly turns into a nightmare due to greed. A cast of heavyweights fails to animate James Marsh’s staid retelling of the 2015 Hatton Garden heist.
The crime drama based on true events revolves around a crew of retired crooks who pull off a major heist in London's jewellery district. King of Thieves review old lags and old jokes. The crooks are staging their robbery not just because several of them are in dire financial straits but because they can’t bear the idea of their own increasing irrelevance.Imagine Ocean's Eleven, but instead of dashing Brad Pitt and George Clooney, you get a posse of old men. On one level, this is another film about the dying of the light. It stars Odunlade Adekola, Femi Adebayo, Toyin Abraham, Broda Shaggi, Adebowale 'Debo' Adedayo aka Mr Macaroni, Lateef Adedimeji, and Ibrahim Chatta. Throughout the film, Marsh throws in subliminal references to the swinging Sixties and to the illustrious pasts of actors like Caine and Courtenay. King of thieves (Agesinkole) is now streaming on Amazon prime after making a box office record as the first Nollywood movie and first yoruba movie to earn. When the gang finally make it through the hole in the wall to the safety deposit boxes, he lets out a huge, primal, I’m-the-daddy-now style roar.
Winstone gets one of the best and most chilling moments in the film. He stands on his head and performs stunts to get people to pay attention to him but we are left in no doubt that he is a vicious thug with a huge chip on his shoulder. Ray Winstone’s Danny is (as Reader calls him) a “shagger”. The second screen telling of the 2015 Hatton Garden jewel heist may please fans of Michael Caine and his seasoned co-stars, but it's a low-carat affair.
